Students enter the CPI Dragon’s Den | The Centre for Process Innovation

leave a comment »

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) has hosted students from Middlesbrough College during a knowledge-sharing event designed to educate students as to the importance of innovation and the development of good ideas into commercial products.

Seventy-five Computing, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering students attended the Innovation and Entrepreneurial Workshop and benefited from tutorials and mentoring from CPI’s industry experts. They were taught about the varied routes to market for successful and innovative ideas, why technology innovation needs to be focussed on problem-solving and the basic elements required to pitch ideas to potential investors.

Catapult [verb]

leave a comment »

Following the lead of successful contract research organisations such as the Faunhofer (Germany) and VTT (Finland), the UK is now establishing Catapult centres.

Catapult centres are intended to create a critical mass for business and research innovation by focusing on a specific technology where there is a potentially large global market and a significant UK capability. These centres will make a major long-term contribution to UK economic growth. Allowing businesses to access equipment and expertise that would otherwise be out of reach, as well as conducting their own in-house R&D. They will also help businesses access new funding streams and point them towards the potential of emerging technologies.

The first Catapult, in High Value Manufacturing, opened for business in October 2011, less than a year after Prime Minister David Cameron announced the £200m+ technology and innovation centre programme. Sandy Gunn is working within the HVM Catapult, and can provide an introduction to Sustainable Processing, Smart Chemistry and funding options.

Another West Riding OCCA event.

This was a very well attended event at The Cedar Court, Bradford. Some excellent speakers and two cutting edge lectures on nano-particle manufacture and dentritic dispersants.

Feedback from the event was very positive, and the committee intends to build on this success in the future.

More information will be appearing on the OCCA site

Opportunity Alert: Company funding for R&D / University showcase event

leave a comment »

With the forthcoming closure of the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), the funding structures for companies to perform product or process development has undergone a period of uncertainty. However, despite the austere times, a considerable level of support for companies to undertake R&D remains.

The Technology Strategy Board has recently re-launched the Grants for Research and Development scheme which offers funding specifically for start-up and SME organisations and runs in parallel to its focussed technology funding calls. In addition, there are a wide range of funded support routes for companies looking to undertake R&D and technology development in collaboration with the university base.

The Materials KTN, has assembled a unique insight into the potential for companies. With keynote presentations from both the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) on the routes to industry focussed research and development and the up and coming funded programmes, this event also includes presentations from organisations on how they have gained commercial advantage through participation with one of the world class universities in the Yorkshire region. The event will be held on the 11th May 2011 at the Village Hotel, Leeds South. Registration  or contact Jenny Barratt-Jones on 01709 722477
